RNE12: Navigating Nuclear with Bob Fine & Dr. Eric Loewen

  • Despite all of the rumors, I am not, in fact, dead. Just working full time. But this week I am happy to bring you another episode of RadioNuclear. This week we discuss how fear-mongering stories about nuclear power plants in the path of a hurricane are irrelevant, the Oyster Creek Shutdown, how nuclear power should be used geopolitically, and lastly we have an interesting interview with ANS past president Dr. Eric Loewen and ANS Executive Director Bob Fine regarding the Society’s new K-12 education program Navigating Nuclear. For questions, comments, or concerns regarding Navigating Nuclear, please email Bob Fine.

RNE11: NRC Special! Dr. Steven Arndt and Dr. Chuck Casto Guest!

While I was hoping this could simply be an episode featuring our two guests from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), I wanted to discuss some recent nuclear fearmongering and intellectual inconsistency of many environmentalists.  While this is something we have known for a long time, recent developments with a Russian floating nuclear power plant and HR 3053 has forced some of the least informed out of the woodwork once again. Dr. Steve Arndt is a senior technical officer in the office of nuclear reactor regulation and shares his insights on the work the NRC does, and what the future of regulation may look like. Dr. Chuck Casto was the leader of a joint-governmental panel sent to Fukushima in the immediate aftermath of the nuclear accident there. He stops by to share what it was like on the ground in the wake of the accident and shares some of the inside stories of how the accident was handled.

RNE10: Is Nuclear Doomed? Georg Steinhauser Guests!

RNE10: Is Nuclear Doomed? Georg Steinhauser Guests!

In this episode, we discuss the future of nuclear advocacy. How does the news out of Ohio change the strategy of advocacy? We try to elaborate on this and much more in the 10th episode of radio nuclear. We also talk about Tom Steyer’s new ballot measure in Arizona, and why Utility companies may be seeking an exit from mercantile generation. Despite all of this news though, new nuclear construction remains at a 25 year high. Our special guest this week is Professor Dr. Georg Steinhauser from Leibniz university of Hannover, where he discusses his work in radioecology, and the importance of taking a creative flair when advocating for nuclear science and technology in the face of public opposition to scientific fact.

RNE09: Science and Free Speech Victory! Sam Belcher and Donald Moul (First Energy) Guest!

There’s been a ton of news since our last episode! We picked out three that had a lot to unpack, so hopefully you will enjoy an extended news segment! The first item we discuss is the new MOU signed between the Ukraine and Holtec to build multiple SMR-160’s in the Ukraine by 2026. We also discuss Mark Z. Jacobson’s decision to drop the lawsuit against PNAS and Christopher Clack, and speculate some of the reasons he may have dropped the case. Lastly, we tackle a new Greenpeace study from Fukushima that will surely make its rounds in the anti-nuclear community, and discuss some questionable findings from this study. For our guest this week, we are lucky enough to be joined by two senior level board members from First Energy, Owner of the Davis-Bessie and Perry nuclear power plants, to discuss the future of nuclear in Ohio!
